Two programs, two years apart, and the story does not improve. Going Nuclear went to air on 1 May 2023 as Australia signed up to the $368 billion plan, and found delays and safety problems in the Collins Class boats we are meant to run in the meantime. Submerged followed on 16 June 2025, after the Pentagon opened its review of the whole arrangement: in that one a former acting US Defense Secretary says he has never seen a major defence program delivered on time, and a former Australian submarine engineer officer says it would be a miracle if we ever see the Virginia-class boats at all. Watch the 2023 one second and see how much of it had already gone wrong by the time the second crew arrived.
That is the exercise. Watch it with a pen. Every time someone on screen names a dependency we do not control, a date that has already slipped, a cost that has already moved, or a capability we are giving up in the meantime — write it down. Then ask yourself what the plan looks like when you stack the list up against $368 billion.
