The Self-Propagating Wave

Light is said to sustain itself, each field making the other, with nothing underneath. That description is a tuned circuit — free space has a capacitance, an inductance and an impedance of 376.73 ohms — with the resistance set to zero by hand. Every tuned circuit ever built rings down. This one is not observed to. The memo disputes no prediction; it asks what is being explained.

Light Needs a Medium

Every familiar wave is a disturbance in a substance, and one formula gives all their speeds to within four per cent. The same formula gives the speed of light, using two measured properties of empty space. In 1856 two men obtained that speed from a capacitor and a coil, with no light in the experiment at all.

What State Of Matter Is It?

Two earlier memos reach conclusions that disagree. Light needs a medium that grips sideways, which makes it a solid; the planets need one that does not grip at all, which makes it a frictionless fluid. One known state of matter does both, predicted in 1969 and made in a laboratory in 2019.

The Universal Medium

One kind of particle fills all of space. The geometry permits exactly two stable clumps, and from there it builds: electron and proton to the neutron, to the nucleus, to the atom, to the molecule. Nothing new is added anywhere. Everything that exists sits on a single scale of how tightly it is packed.

Space Is the Void

One word covers two different things: the bare room, which has no properties and cannot be acted on, and whatever fills it, which has density and state. Einstein’s own equations translate into statements about a medium without changing a single number.

The Proton’s Internal Pressure

The stiffness of the Aether against squeezing is locked to its stiffness against twisting by the geometry of how it is built. The twisting stiffness sets the speed of light, so the other follows — and with it a single number for the pressure inside a proton, with nothing left to adjust. The prediction the framework is staked on.

Squeeze a hydrogen atom hard enough and the electron is driven down onto the proton until it circles at nearly the speed of light. Five measured quantities constrain the picture and only one is left free — the tilt of the spin axis, at about a hundredth of a degree.

The Speed of Light

How fast a wave crosses a material is not a property of the wave. It is a property of the material. Maxwell built a mechanical model of the medium in 1862, worked out its wave speed, and landed within one per cent of light.

Hit a steel rail and you send a squeeze along it. Shake it and you send a sideways wave. Twist it and you send a twist. The Aether has all three and only one is ever seen. The other two are each barred, for different reasons.

Why It Must Be a Solid

Shake a rope and the wave runs along it while the rope moves across the direction of travel. You cannot do that with air. Light is the sideways kind of wave, so whatever carries it must grip sideways — which makes it a solid some hundred thousand times stiffer than diamond.

The Lattice

Squeeze a rubber block and it bulges. Twist it and it resists that too. For any ordinary material you must measure both. For the Aether you need measure only one, because the two are locked together by the shape of the thing.
