The idea is simple enough. Most history reaches you as a story someone has already decided on, with the workings left out. Here the workings are the point. Fourteen periods are laid on one linear axis drawn to scale, so the relative lengths are true — Egypt runs two thousand years across the top while Rome and Egypt together occupy seventy. Each band is a page you can open. Inside it, every event carries its date, and every date carries numbered references to what attests it, so you can see whether a thing rests on a contract in a museum, on a historian writing two centuries later, or on nothing but repetition. Where the sources are missing, they are listed beside the ones that survive. It runs from 3000 BC to AD 180, and a second timeline picks up at AD 500 and runs to the present.
