Day 15 Saturday 4 July 2026 Snowy Mountains, NSW by Brett Murrell

DECIDED BY BLOCKADE

No parliament for five weeks. So what happens instead?

It has been reported that AUKUS discussion was kept off the agenda at this weekend’s NSW Labor state conference — apparently too contentious. So much for the freedom of party members to debate the things that matter. If that is right, it suggests a fair few people inside the tent are starting to work out that the plan amounts to an expensive set of submarines going to the wrong place.

Australia should be asking who is actually directing this — and whether their interests are ours.

America first, Australia loses. Decided by blockade, not battle.

Here is a piece I put together a few weeks ago, setting out where AUKUS is taking us.

America First, Australia Loses. A net assessment of Australia’s war plan. Even if the United States wins a war with China, Australia — and the whole Asia-Pacific — loses it, because no nation in the region can survive the energy and trade shutoff that decides it. Submarines and warships cannot answer that war. It is decided by blockade, not battle, and this country’s fuel reserves and food supply chains are thin and run just in time.
